The Broads

Norfolk is home to a uniquely stunning environment shaped over thousands of years by both human and nature. Covering over 300 square miles of East Anglian countryside, the Norfolk Broads is a vast navigable network of complex waterways.

The Broads comprise of rivers, lakes and stunning wildlife; all of which can be enjoyed on the peaceful paths and cycle ways that run throughout this area. Dotted around this wonderful environment are unspoilt villages and market towns that make this county so wonderfully unique.

Since the 19th century, The Broads have been a popular destination for boating holidays. Climb aboard a boat, hop on a bike or put on your walking boots and navigate the meandering rivers and glimmering lakes of this area. Take a trip to the rocky ruins of St Benet’s Abbey and soak up the local area’s fascinating history. More than 1,000 years ago, this isolated spot on the River Bure was a thriving and important monastery.

Take an afternoon to visit the typically beautiful Norfolk villages of Wroxham and Hoveton. Each village sits either side of the meandering River Bure and are collectively known as the capital of The Broads.

Norfolk History

Norfolk boasts a variety of royal estates and stately homes teeming with fascinating history, sprawling parklands and lavish architecture.

Since 1977, visitors have been allowed entry into the Queen’s magnificent private estate, Sandringham House. Set in 24 hectares of pristine gardens, the house has been the private home of four generations of British monarchs.

Situated beside the north Norfolk coast, Holkham Hall is a luxurious 17th century country house with a pristine walled garden. The hall exhibits elements of Palladian style architecture and displays a diverse collection of art including paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck and Gainsborough.

Norfolk’s county town is the most complete medieval city in the UK, from the medieval period until the start of the Industrial Revolution; Norwich was England’s second city. In the present day, Norwich is still just as popular with its ancient streets packed full of shoppers, street entertainers, arts and music. The city offers over 1500 historical buildings, an exciting arts scene, and delicious local produce and drink.

Built in the heart of the city by the Normans, Norwich Castle was built as a royal palace rather than a fortification, despite the fact no royalty has ever lived here. In 1984, it opened as a museum and today it exhibits significant East Anglian artefacts and works of art. Just across the city, Norwich Cathedral was constructed in 1096 and is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. The surrounding grounds, Cathedral Close, is one of the largest in Europe and its spire is the second tallest in England.

2. Norfolk Coast Path

Running from west to east, from Hunstanton to Sea Palling, the Norfolk Coast Path explores the uncovered beauty and drama of Norfolk’s coastal landscape. Stretching for over 129 miles, through the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the path passes panoramic beaches, rugged cliffs, a diverse collection of wildlife and our spacious West Runton Club Site.

3. Sheringham Park

Situated close to the quaint village of Upper Sheringham, Sheringham Park is a landscape park and woodland garden offering a fantastic day out for the whole family. Explore the park’s vast collection of rhododendrons and azaleas and climb to the top of the towers to experience breath-taking views of the Norfolk coastline.

4. Holkham Hall

Surrounded by 3,000 acres of scenic parkland rich with wildlife, Holkham Hall is a lavish 17th stately home situated just off the Norfolk coastline. Take a leisurely stroll the 18th century, 6 acre walled garden before exploring the house’s indulgent furniture and extravagant architecture.
